The pump is the one piece of equipment a pool cannot do without. Heaters are a comfort and cleaners are a convenience, but nothing else moves water through the filter — so when the pump goes, the pool starts deteriorating the same day.
The useful thing is that pumps almost never fail silently. They give weeks or months of warning, in ways that are easy to dismiss as "it always did that".
Sounds that mean something
Screeching or grinding
A high-pitched squeal or a grinding rumble is the motor bearings wearing out. It is the most common warning a pool pump gives and the most commonly ignored, because the pump keeps running for a while after it starts. It will not recover on its own — bearing noise only ever gets worse.
Humming without starting
The motor buzzes but the shaft does not turn. That is usually a failed start capacitor. It is one of the cheaper repairs on a pool, provided the motor is not left humming — a motor that cannot start still draws current and heats up.
Rattling or vibration
Often debris in the impeller rather than the motor. Worth clearing early, because an impeller running out of balance puts load straight onto the bearings you would rather keep.
Water behaving differently
The pump loses prime
If the basket keeps emptying of water, or the pump needs re-priming after being off, air is getting into the suction side — a lid seal, an O-ring, a valve or a leak in the line. Air in the system means the pump is not moving the water it should, and running dry damages the seal.
Air bubbles from the return jets
A steady stream of bubbles back into the pool is the same problem seen from the other end. Occasional bubbles after service are normal; continuous bubbles are not.
Weak return flow
Reduced flow with clean baskets and a clean filter points at the pump rather than a blockage — commonly a worn impeller.

Water underneath the pump
A wet patch under the motor end is usually the shaft seal. This one matters more than it looks: the seal is what keeps water out of the motor. Left alone, a cheap seal failure turns into a replaced motor.
Rust or corrosion on the housing
Common near the coast, where salt air works on equipment continuously. Surface rust is cosmetic. Rust around the seal or bearings means water has been getting somewhere it should not.
The motor is too hot to touch
Pumps run warm. They should not run hot enough that you cannot hold a hand on the housing. Overheating is usually restricted flow, failing bearings or poor ventilation.
A pump that trips the breaker repeatedly is not a nuisance — it is an electrical fault being reported. Turn it off at the breaker and have it looked at. Repeatedly resetting a breaker to keep a pump running is how a repair becomes a fire risk.
Repair or replace?
Capacitors, seals, O-rings and impellers are ordinary repairs on an otherwise sound pump. Bearings are the judgement call — the work is often close enough to the cost of a motor that replacement makes more sense, particularly on an older single-speed pump where a variable-speed replacement will cut running costs.
What is worth avoiding is repairing the same pump repeatedly. Two failures in a year on an old motor is the pump telling you where this is heading.
The short version
Listen to it. Screeching means bearings, humming means a capacitor, and water under the motor means the seal. Any of those gets cheaper the sooner it is dealt with. A pump tripping the breaker gets switched off and looked at, not reset.
