Start with the thing that causes most of the confusion: a salt water pool is a chlorine pool. It is sanitised by chlorine, exactly like any other pool. The only difference is where the chlorine comes from.
In a traditional pool you add chlorine. In a salt pool, dissolved salt passes through a cell that converts it into chlorine continuously, and the chlorine then reverts to salt to be used again. You are not choosing between chlorine and no chlorine. You are choosing between buying chlorine and generating it.

The case for salt in Florida
The water genuinely is more pleasant. Lower, steadier chlorine levels mean less of the smell and eye irritation people associate with pools — and that irritation is largely chloramines, which build up in heavily used, poorly balanced water rather than being caused by chlorine itself.
There is also less chemical handling. In a climate where pools run twelve months a year, generating chlorine continuously suits the workload better than dosing a pool that never gets a winter off.
The parts people are not told
The cell wears out, and it is not cheap
A salt cell is a consumable. It has a finite service life measured in operating hours, and Florida pools run it hard all year. Replacing one is a real expense that should be budgeted for from the day the system is installed, not discovered when it fails.
A salt cell does not usually stop. It fades — producing gradually less chlorine as it ages, while the system still appears to be running normally. The pool slowly becomes harder to keep clear and the cause is invisible unless output is actually checked.
Salt pools push pH up
The generation process tends to raise pH over time. Left alone, that produces exactly the cloudy water and reduced chlorine effectiveness described above. Salt does not remove the need to manage water chemistry — it changes which direction the chemistry drifts.
Salt is hard on some materials
Salt water is corrosive over time to certain stone, metal fixtures, heaters and fittings. It is manageable and it is not a reason to avoid salt, but it is worth knowing before installing one around natural stone coping.
Stabiliser and calcium still matter
The cell makes chlorine. It does nothing about cyanuric acid, calcium hardness, alkalinity or phosphates. Every one of those still needs testing and correcting weekly, which is why a salt pool takes the same weekly service as any other.
So which should you have?
Salt suits you if you use the pool constantly, dislike handling chemicals, want gentler water, and can absorb a cell replacement every few years.
Traditional chlorine suits you if you want the lowest installation cost and the simplest possible equipment, or the pool is used seasonally rather than daily.
What should not drive the decision is the belief that salt is lower maintenance. It moves the maintenance around. It does not remove it.

Salt pools are chlorine pools with an on-site chlorine factory attached. The water feels better and you handle fewer chemicals, at the price of a wear part that eventually needs replacing and a pH that drifts upward. Both types need testing and balancing every week.
